Your Task:

As you walk this unique and inspiring NYC park, you will be stopping at the five specific spots indicated below. You can take as many photos as you wish, but you will only be submitting one photo per stop for the official competition. Keep in mind that each official stop has a specific theme. These themes will help you focus your lens on a specific mood or subject. Our judges will be looking for your ability to capture the theme in the photos you submit.

A few additional notes before you begin:

  • You can take any style of photos that you wish: Landscape, Portraits, Abstract, etc. (or a combination of styles), just be sure to represent the theme for each stop.

  • You can incorporate props in any/all of your photos.

  • The High Line is a busy, public space. Be respectful of others who are enjoying their time in the park. If taking photos that are specifically focused on individuals you don’t know, be sure to ask permission first.

  • Most importantly, Be Creative and Have fun!

  • Competition Deadline = Sunday, October 20th at 11PM EST

  • Refer to https://www.hsfilmfest.com/scavenger-hunt for additional submission Rules & Guidelines

Stops & Themes:

STOP #1: DILLER – VON FURSTENBERG SUNDECK & WATER FEATURE

Between 14th St. and 15th St.

When the High Line was still an empty railroad track, water would accumulate at this spot naturally—that’s why the designers planned the subtle water feature here. It’s a family favorite during warmer months, a place for both children and children-at-heart to dip their toes.

THEME #1: ENERGY & LAUGHTER

What better way to begin your journey than with a healthy dose of positivity and good vibes. At this stop we’re asking you to capture an image that embodies the spirit of ENERGY & LAUGHTER!

STOP #2: 10TH AVENUE SQUARE & OVERLOOK

At 17th St.

This extraordinary window down to the street was created by removing the steel beams of the original High Line structure. The amphitheater (fully wheelchair accessible) is the site of both public performances and daily people-watching on the street below.

THEME #2: TENSION & HOPE

Your next stop is this must see amphitheater with stunning views looking north on 10th Avenue. Here, we’re asking you to capture an image that highlights TENSION & HOPE.

STOP #3: CHELSEA THICKET

Between 21st St. and 22nd St.

Here, the original steel train tracks run along the pathway between the dogwoods, bottlebrush buckeye, hollies, and other dense shrubs and trees—a magical convergence of the industrial and the natural.

THEME #3: MAN VS. NATURE

Our personal favorite Highline spot, the thicket is a revelation of natural, secluded beauty, so it’s no surprise that the photo you’ll take here will illuminate MAN VS. NATURE.

STOP #4: 23RD STREET LAWN & SEATING STEPS

At 23rd St.

Anchored on the southern end with seating steps made of reclaimed teak, this is a popular spot for picnics. You can find site-specific art installations here, including our annual mural on a neighboring building.

THEME #4: ROMANCE & LIGHT

Offering a chance to reminisce about your summer memories, your next stop is a true representation of this year’s theme: Juxtaposition. Whether you focus your lens on the unique seating, manicured lawn or cityscape views, be sure to snap a pic that reflects ROMANCE & LIGHT.

STOP #5: 26TH STREET VIEWING SPUR

At 26th St.

The rectangular frame here showcases crosstown views at 26th Street—including a look at the original offices of Friends of the High Line in the Hudson Guild building, and the Chelsea Elliot Houses, which are home to 2,000 neighbors.

THEME #5: ANGLES & ARCHITECTURE

Our final stop provides a fitting frame for the competition, with stunning crosstown views and endless creative possibilities. Show off your skills while capturing a shot that presents ANGLES & ARCHITECTURE.
